It’s hard for us to believe, but Wild Wonders began 35 years ago, in 1991.

What started with a desert tortoise, an Amazon parrot, a boa constrictor, and a chinchilla on just ¾ of an acre in Vista grew from one woman’s vision into something truly extraordinary.

Founder Jackie Navarro began by visiting preschools to see if there was interest in wildlife programs. The response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Word quickly spread, referrals poured in, and Jackie’s belief was confirmed: there was a deep, grassroots desire for wildlife education and conservation.

Inspired by that momentum, she made the leap—leaving her full-time position at the San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park to share her passion for wildlife with the broader community.

Thirty-five years later, here we are:

  • Home to over 100 animal ambassadors, representing habitats from around the world
  • Relocated in 2005 to 10 beautiful hilltop acres in Bonsall
  • Recognized as a leader in wildlife education programs
  • Proud partners with conservation organizations across multiple continents
  • Hosting conservation-focused safaris to Africa, Borneo, and Costa Rica through our travel company, Wild Ecotours

Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing monthly snippets from our history—and celebrating with special offers along the way.

Start-Up Efforts and Early Challenges

Finding the right location
Jackie knew that growing her vision meant finding land that could support a diverse group of animal ambassadors. It quickly became clear that much more than ¾ of an acre would be needed.

Building safe, enriching habitats
Habitat design is both an art and a science. Animals must be kept safe, while also living in environments that reflect their natural behaviors. From climbing structures for arboreal species to enrichment features—and making sure groundhogs could dig without digging out—every detail mattered.

Securing permits
Caring for wildlife requires extensive permitting through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Once approvals were secured, the collection—and the mission—could truly grow.

At last, Jackie was able to move in…and Wild Wonders took root.
