Our Anatolian Shepherd
Last year, we welcomed Bear to Wild Wonders to serve as his temporary guardian. The plan was for him to grow strong here before traveling to South Africa to join the Cheetah Outreach Trust’s Livestock Guard Dog Program.
Even as a young pup, his enormous paws hinted at what was to come. Fully grown Anatolian Shepherds often exceed 100 pounds — and Bear has certainly lived up to that expectation. He now weighs 120 pounds and is still growing.
Cheetah Outreach Trust, one of our longest-standing conservation partners, trains and places livestock guardian dogs with farmers throughout South Africa. These dogs protect goats, sheep, and cattle from predators. Their presence helps prevent retaliatory killings of cheetahs, which are critically endangered. When livestock are protected, cheetahs are protected too.
It was originally hoped that Bear would eventually contribute to the guardian dog program in South Africa. As circumstances evolved, that path changed — and Bear has remained with us at Wild Wonders. We are grateful he did. He now serves as a powerful, living reminder of the connection between responsible animal management and global conservation efforts.
