The Owl with a Story to Tell
Archie came to Wild Wonders after being deemed non-releasable. Early in life, he either fell or was pushed from his nest, and despite receiving the care he needed to survive, he wasn’t able to develop the skills required to live in the wild.
Short for Archimedes, Archie is a stunning example of a Great Horned Owl. His powerful talons make him a formidable predator—so much so that our keepers wear thick gloves when handling him! But beyond those impressive features, Archie enjoys spending time outdoors, taking in the sights and sounds of Wild Wonders, and joining us for education programs at schools and libraries.
Owls are extraordinary hunters. While those feather tufts on Archie’s head may look like ears, they’re not—his real ears are hidden and give him an incredible sense of hearing. Combine that with sharp eyesight and nearly silent flight, and you have one of nature’s most efficient predators. In fact, a single owl can consume around 4,000 rodents each year, playing a vital role in keeping ecosystems balanced.
